Edo period (1615-1868), 19th centuryRectangular with canted edges lacquered in kinji and silver hiramaki-e with inlays of pewter and mother-of-pearl against a roiro-nuri ground, decorated with a scene from the Chapter Nine of the Ise monogatari (The Tales of Ise) with Ariwara no Narihira composing a verse for his beloved while an itinerant monk rests beneath a tree after promising to carry the note back to Kyoto, the interior with a continuous design of ivy in two shades of brown and gold hiramaki-e, fitted with a rectangular silver water dropper and a slate inkstone 9 1/4 x 8 1/8 x 1 3/4in. (23.5 x 20.6 x 4.5cm)
