Unsigned Japan, Tokyo, second half of 19th century
Finely carved as a lively group of a mother Shishi with her three cubs, the entire composition set on a circular base. The mother is snarling, while the three young Shishi have their heads lifted to the sky. Fine details, the underside with himotoshi. The manner of carving and stain is very much reminiscent of Ishikawa Rensai of Asakusa, Tokyo.
