Unsigned Japan, late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868)
A rather large ivory netsuke depicting a bald man wearing a kimono and throwing roasted soybeans, also known as oni-yarai – a year-end rite to dispel demons and oni during the Setsubun festival. Fine patina and himotoshi through the back.

Condition: Good condition with expected age cracks. Provenance: French private collection.
