"Picasso a tellement peint, dessiné, gravé ce thème tout au long de sa vie, et sous tous les angles, qu'il est presque devenu, comme l'écrit Michel Leiris 'un genre en soi'. En 1963 et 1964, il ne peint guère plus que cela : le peintre armé de ses attributs, palette et pinceaux, la toile posée sur un chevalet, le plus souvent vue de profil comme un écran, et le modèle nu, assis ou couché. Plus qu'une évocation de son propre travail - Picasso peignait rarement d'après modèle, et sans palette - il s'agit donc d'un résumé de la profession. Que signifie ce motif si important pour Picasso, du premier tableau de 1914 aux derniers dessins de 1971 (MNAM, Donation Leiris), en passant par l'illustration du Chef-d’?uvre inconnu de Balzac en 1926 Il y a dans cette scène deux éléments en jeu : le thème du regard, du voyeurisme, la mise en scène de l'acte de regarder, point de départ de la création, et l'ironie sur la profession, la mise en scène de l'acte de peindre.
