early 19th century
the bardiglio marble upper section with later mounts, the central green marble veneered section with three tiers of?classical?figures riding chariots separated by mouldings and festoons, the bardiglio base, probably earlier and?with finely chased ribbon-tied vine garlands, restoration
134cm. high
Condition Report This an extraordinary object, which presents all sorts of interesting questions. The pedestal has undergone some trauma, seemingly from being knocked to the ground. This has resulted in a replaced marble shelf-top, replaced later mounts to the top tier of the grey bardiglio marble. This upper tier with evidence of former fixing holes, from previous mounts, most like to be similar to those on the lower tier. Multiple repairs to green veneers to column - some filler and veneers loose and some losses revealing the plaster ground. The historic mounts of superior quality. But also displaying evidence of repair including later fixing screws. The mounts also displaying tarnishing and oxidisation, with deposits of white plaster and glue in places. There is much ingrained and the fines off the mounts and figuring of the green marble will be improved or enhanced from a thorough clean. The swags to the lowest tier are of very good qulaity and finely executed. One swag from this lower section loose. This unusual pedestal is very decorative, additional images are available on request.
