Anonymous, Edo Period (1615-1868), probably 19th century Chiefly representing an ingénue (actually the ghost of a young woman), the fleshy, smiling countenance characteristically delineated with a slight double chin, high eyebrows and downturned eyelids, unsigned; with a stand. 21.3cm (8?in) high. Among sixty primary designs in Noh masks, Ko-Omote, as shown here represents a girl in her teens, and she is the prototype for over twenty other onna-men (masks of women), each varying subtly from the innocence of this mask, through which evolved into a wide range of female roles; where in the Noh Play a skilled actor can imbue an impassive expression with subtle emotion according to his movements.
