Finely wired on a white ground, each elephant is richly caparisoned with vibrant multi-coloured trappings and draped with a blanket, one decorated with the fu flying amidst clouds above a band of waves and rocks, the other depicting scrolling lotus flowers surrounded by entangled vines, and each with an additional suspended panel representing beaded garland fringe, height 5.25" — 13.3 cm.
Provenance:
From a Distinguished Toronto Collection
Note:
Most existing examples of 18th/19th century cloisonné elephants are of a larger scale. The miniature version, requiring delicate copper wiring and a precise enamel filling and firing technique, is extremely rare. The Arthur M. Sackler Collection featured a similar example, which was sold through Christie’s New York, March 24, 2011, lot 1614, for 362,500 USD.
小尺寸的掐絲琺瑯大象極為少見,一例原藏於薩克勒家族,後售於紐約佳士得,成交價美金362,500
