Description Kirshehir or Savak prayer rug, central Anatolia, first half 19th century. Grote-Hasenbalg published a nearly identical rug in that notable publication of the early 20th century. This glowing red prayer rug displays the conventional architectural stepped mihrab arch. Upturned ewers that symbolize purity and ablution appear in each spandrel on a green ground while multiple narrow borders surround the mihrab. The use of a heavily corrosive black dye identifies this among a similar type from the Savak region, though the design is often referred to as Kirshehir, or Mujur.
