拍品描述 翻译
Property of various owners Anonymous Scenes from Genji monogatari (The Tale of Genji)Edo period (1615-1868), 17th centuryA pair of six-panel screens painted in ink, color, gold, and gold leaf on paper mounted on a wood lattice and with lacquered wood frames, depicting 12 scenes from Genji monogatari (The Tale of Genji), as described in detail below, with clouds separating the scenes raised in gold relief paint 62 x 139 1/4in (157.5 x 353.7cm) (2). 注脚 As demonstrated by the panoramic exhibition "The Tale of Genji: A Japanese Classic Illuminated," held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 2019 and featuring numerous masterpieces of Genji-related art, the Tale has occupied a central position in Japanese culture for a millennium, rising to a mid-term peak during the during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries (see also lots 983 and 984). The same period witnessed the rise of the folding screen pair as one of the most important formats for Japanese painting and their large scale made them especially well-suited for compositions featuring several episodes from a single Genji chapter or, as in this case, episodes from multiple chapters; for an example featuring every single chapter of the Tale, in the Metropolitan Museum of Art (formerly Burke Collection), see John T. Carpenter and Melissa McCormick, The Tale of Genji: A Japanese Classic Illuminated (exh. cat.). Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, March 5-June 16, 2019, cat. no.59 and Appendix Two.In the current lot, where each chapter bears a small label, the rightmost panels feature scenes from Chapters 1: Kiritsubo in the top right corner (the Emperor removes Genji, aged seven, from the line of succession) and 5: Wakamurasaki below (peeping through brushwood fence, Genji catches his first glimpse of Wakamurasaki, aged ten); the central panels are painted with scenes from Chapters 23: Hatsune (New Year's Day celebrations at Genji's Rokujo estate) and 24: Kocho (Murasaki's page girls travel in water-bird and dragon boats); and the left panels show scenes from Chapters 9, Aoi (with the "Battle of the Carriages") and 3: Utsusemi (Genji spies on Utsusemi playing a game of go with her stepdaughter). The right-hand panels of the left-hand screen feature scenes from Chapters 14: Miotsukushi (Genji gives thanks at the Sumiyoshi Shrine on his return from exile) and 28: (Yugiri calls on Umetsubo and finds maidservants collecting dew for crickets); the central panels features a single chapter, Chapter 7: Momiji no ga (Genji and To no Chujo dance "Waves of the Blue Sea"); and the left-hand panels feature three consecutive chapters, Chapter 17: E-awase (The Picture Contest), Chapter 19: Usugumo (Genji arrives at Katsura to take the Akashi Lady's infant daughter to be brought up by a foster mother) and Chapter 18: Matsukaze (Genji pays a visit to the Akashi Lady at a villa he has built for her in Katsura, but is disturbed by other courtiers who discover his whereabouts).
