A pair of Continental silver toothpick holders, probably German but both marked only with a Russian import mark, second half of 19th century, one modelled as a fisherman with net and basket, wearing a sou'wester hat, the other as a peasant women with basket on her back, buttenfrau, wearing an embroidered scarf around her head, both on rocky octagonal bases, 13.5 cm. high, wt. 282 gm.
There is evidence of a tiny repair where fisherman's basket joins pole, the basket is also detachable from the pole; the woman once held a staff that is now absent apart from the top of it which is still in her hand, there is gilding around the octagonal base rim and also gilding inside the base of this female figure who leans slightly to the right
