Dr. Lin 221. A rare Qianlong period and marked olive green square vase with Ba Gwa motif. This form of vases is called Zhun vases. Zhun originated more than 6000 years ago as jade zhuns for use in official ceremonies. Celadon porcelain zhun vases were made in Song dynasty reflecting emperor Hwei Zhon’s taste for antiquity. This vase has a very fine and white clay body typical for Qianlong imperial porcelains. A thin layer of pale brown coating was applied to the body before application of the glaze. The glaze is very thick in a color close to “dou qin” (pea green) of Song celadon porcelains, perhaps intended to imitate Song zhun vases. The imitation effort is successful in that the glaze has a low viscosity and high surface tension at the temperature during firing and cooling. As a result it runs and accumulates above protruding ridges and around concave corners. It also drains thin at the tips of protruding corners, revealing the underlying brown coating. These features are common among Song celadon porcelains. The typical underglaze blue Qianlong mark is written in Kai Su form in the center of outer base. A small number of zhun vases were made between Qianlong and the last emperor of Qing dynasty for imperial use. Zhun vases from different period can readily be differentiated primarily based on shape and the clay, though other features can support identification too. Song zhuns are slender and have coarse clay. Zhun vases made after Qianlong are increasingly fat; the clays are finer than Song counterparts but are coarser than Qianlong’s. The shape of Qianlong zhuns are between these two, being slender than those of a later period. Further, as shown by this vase, the neck of Qianlong zhun vases is longer, in proportion to the height of the body, then those of a later periods. Similarly, Qianlong zhuns’ mouth and foot are larger, in proportion to the cross sections of the body, than those of later periods. H 25.1 cm. (From Dr. Robert I-San Lin’s Collection of Important Chinese Arts, California) Dr. Lin
