Dr. Lin 457. An extremely fine and very rare Yongzheng conical “Tuo Tai” bowl with dou cai decoration and Chenghua-mark. This bowl is very delicately formed in a conical form that was popular during Song, Yuan, and early Ming dynasties, but rare during Qing Dynasty. “Tuo Tai” means a porcelain ware without a clay body. The wall of this bowl is extremely thin, formed primarily by the glazes on the inner and outer walls, with most of the body-forming clay removed. This is accomplished by employing a very difficult and elaborate technique invented during Yongle period. As such, the whole body is translucent, except the area around the foot and the base. Looking through the inner wall against light, the floral designs and their colors can be clearly seen. The residual clay body of the foot is white and extremely fine, as can bee seen and felt around the foot rim. The glaze is unctuous and waxy, resembling the fine glaze of Chenghua porcelains. The decoration on the outer wall is delicate, meticulous, and formal, somewhat different from Chenghua Dou Cai wares that often show improperly filled color enamels, sometimes filling beyond the outlines, sometimes leaving gaps of unfilled spaces. While some of the finest imitations of Chenghua wares were made by the order of Yongzheng emperor to strictly adhere to the original shape and decoration, the imperial artists have exercised their discretions to make the best porcelain wares. An example here: a lemon yellow enamel is use on this bowl, which was just invented during this reign. This is the decisive reason to classify it as a Yongzheng work of art; despite that this bowl closely resembles Chenghua porcelain in many other aspects. “Tuo Tai” wares are rare, a “Tuo Tai” ware of Yongzheng is even rarer, let alone having a Chenghua mark. Diameter 12.6 cm, height 4.4 cm, weight 74.1 grams. (From Dr. Robert I-San Lin’s Collection of Important Chinese Arts, California)Dr.
