Dr. Lin 345. An extremely rare imperial Guangxu period and marked reverse porcelain vase featuring a dragon and a phoenix. A reverse porcelain ware (Fan Chee) refers to a ware that is intentionally made without glaze on the external wall but glazed on the outer base and internal walls. Fan Chee evolved from Qianlong’s porcelain carving as a way to decorate porcelains. Properly done this technique can avoid blurring of the carving by the overlaying glazes or enamels. Fan Chee is not an unfinished work-in-progress. They are functional because the glaze on the inner wall resists corrosion and water seepage, while the unglazed outer surface shows the beauty of carving. This vase is first potted and molded to give the basic form, and then selected areas are carved to form the decorations in relief. It has an elegant shape, resembling a Yu Hu Chwen Ping flattened front-to back, with the mouth and the foot in a rectangular shape. The body is made of fine clay with a grayish-green tinge that is commonly used for top quality imperial wares. The carving is very artistic. An auspicious beast mask is carved on right and left sides of the neck. Each has circularly curled mane, a protruded forehead, two giant eyes, and a large upward-tipping nose. The beast’s extraordinarily large mouth is closed gently with both corners open slightly, reflecting a smiling face. This type auspicious beast heads started to be popularly used in porcelains during the Five-Dynasty period, primarily among Yeh Yiao. It continues to decorate many porcelain wares of Yuan and Ming periods. Among most of the beast faces, these two on this vase have the most funny and friendly look, like a clown’s face. A ferocious standing and front facing dragon is molded and carved in detail on the front face of the vase, with protruding eyes wide open, twin horns projecting upward, huge mane spreading backward, and claws wide open, readying to seize any opportunity that comes, and reflecting the power of the emperor. On the opposite side, a beautiful phoenix flying spiritedly among ru yi shape clouds, with its mouth holding a branch of the longevity mushroom Lin Zhi. The details of the phoenix are well-carved, including the head, long neck, twin wide open wings, two slender legs, and extraordinarily long twin tail feather. The ru yi clouds are carved into layers, showing detail structures. The scene of flying phoenix among auspicious clouds reflects the dignity and happiness of the queen. The external base has the 6-word reign mark in three columns of Kai Shu (formal style) in underglaze blue. The mark is typical for Guangxu imperial mark. The transparent glaze on the base and the inner wall are slightly grayish with green tinge; which is one of the typical glazes for imperial porcelains of the period. (From Dr. Robert I-San Lin’s Collection of Important Chinese Arts, California). H 25.5cm.
