Cedar wood. Four-part with seperate cord runners, curved j?-ge. In delicate Takamakie with subtle Hiramakie, carved red and gold lacquer on oxidised silver ground a standing boy wearing rich robes with his face inlaid of copper. On his chest is inlaid a delicate strong relief of the smiling face of Hotei. On verso a cheerful Karako with a mother-of-pearl belt sits in front of a Tsuitate behind his drum, holding his sticks in both hands. The screen is decorated with vivid bamboo branches of gold on dark ground, the frame with broad edges and its bottom of very delicately carved Tsuishu. Inside matte Roiro with Kinji edges. H.9.8cm. Signed: J?ka on red lacquer seal. J?kasai was used by a number of varnish artists of the Yamada school, which existed from the late 17th century to the end of the Edo period. Condition A.
