A CHINESE SANCAI GLAZED POTTERY MODEL OF A HORSE AND FEMALE RIDER, TL TESTED, TANG DYNASTY (AD 618-907). Modelled seated astride the horse, wearing an amber glazed robe, the horse glazed overall in green, on rectangular base. With Oxford Authentication Ltd Thermoluminescence Analysis Report, Sample No: C200b3: it was estimated that the date of the last firing was between 900-1500 years ago, consistent with the period of manufacture, certificate dated 19 October 2000. 30.5cm long x 37.5cm high. Provenance: Property of a Lancashire family. The horse's ears are restored, the legs have been cracked through and restored, the rectangular base may also have been cracked and restored, there is extensive green overpainting and retouching to the green glaze throughout, although it is particularly evident to the front and rear of the horse (including tail) and to the rider. This may conceal further restoration around the neck of the horse and through the rider's waist. With drilled testing holes to reverse of her head, to her right foot and to the underside of the horse, also apparently to the left side of stomach. Typical flaking to glaze and minor chipping.
