Collection of Emile Guimet (1836-1918), acquired in the early 20th century, and thence by descent. Sotheby’s Hong Kong, 8th October 2008, lot 2006. In the 55th year of the Qianlong reign (1790), the aged Emperor greeted a zhengshou 'True Longevity' year. This year?happened also to be his?80th birthday, making an event equal to a natural coalescence of the numbers of heaven (1, 3, 5, 7, 9) and earth (2, 4, 6, 8, 10). As such, it deserved an especially grand celebration. Therefore, as early as the autumn of the previous year, Qianlong began to plan the celebration,?deciding on the location of palaces at which he was to accept congratulations, the scale involved, and the birthday tributes wishing him longevity received from everywhere in China and from all vassal states. Likewise and as custom demanded, the making of special birthday seals was also essential. This time he focused on The Grand Plan (Hongfan)?section of Shangshu [Classic of documents], where it is recorded that after King Wu of Zhou defeated the Shang, he asked the Viscount of Ji about the Way of Heaven. The Viscount of Ji then told him about the Nine Divisions of the Great Plan: "1.?stay in step with the sequence of the five phases (metal, wood, water, fire and earth); 2.?reverently attend to the five essential Matters (appearance, speech, observation, listening, and thinking); 3. to develop agriculture use the eight policies (covering: foodstuffs, circulation of goods, sacrifices to gods and ancestors, public works, education, suppression of banditry, proper entertainment of noble quests, and the military); 4. integrated use of the fice ways of keeping time (by yea, month, day, stars, and calendar); 5. the establishment and use of imperial standards; 6. regulation and application of the three virtues (impartially, hard prevalence, and soft prevalence); 7. intelligent verification by examination; 8. thoughtful use of all signs (rain, rising sun, warmth, cold, and wind); and 9. timely use of the five blessings (longevity, health, wealth, love of virtue, and natural death) and awesome use of the six extreme misfortunes (violent early death, bad health, distress, poverty, being hated, and rendered weak)." The Qianlong Emperor considered the Nine Divisions of the Great Plan as "the source of governing for all emperors forever... since without exception they concern the whole body and whole mind of the sovereign." And the eighth?division "thoughtful use of all signs coincided exactly with the Emperor's own thinking. Thereupon he formulated the inscription bazheng maonian zhi bao (Treasure of the eighty-year-old?who concerns himself with the Eight Signs) to be carved on a seal face. As the Emperor explained in his?Bazheng maonian bao ji [Record of the mindful of the Signs of the Eighth at eighty seal], "Thinking that what could help celebrate my 80th birthday was to have a special inscription carved on seals to be used for pieces of my calligraphy kept in palaces, I hade the thought that nothing could be better than the phrase?bazheng?(Signs of the Eighth) taken from The Grand Plan.?I?decided a long time ago that when I reached 85, I ought to retire after completing 60 full years of my reign. As I have never even for a single day let my shoulders rest, constantly mindful of all my people, how could I not be mindful of the signs given in the Eighth Division? To be mindful of the signs is how I remain mindful of all my people. According to the Book of Rites, "To be 80 years of age?is called mao?(octogenarian), a designation for one whose sense and wisdom have declined." Now here I am, having reached 80, but fortunately blessed by the aid of heaven, my health is sound, allowing me to handle myriad matters in a single day, so there is no indication that I am in decline, and I must continue to exert myself." Therefore, the engraving bazheng maonian zhi bao?was both to celebrate his 80th birthday and an admonition to himself. In the following several months,?bazheng maonian zhi bao?became a topic often discussed by the Emperor and his ministers since it was closely connected with the 80th birthday celebration. It attracted much attention, even to the extent that at a grand tea party held during the first lunar month of the 55th year of his reign at Chonghuagong (Palace of Many Splendors), the theme set for the game the Emperor, court officials, and Hanlin Academy officials to play of composing paired couplets was in fact bazheng maonian zhi bao. The Qianlong Emperor also often talked about the circumstances surrounding the making of?the first?bazheng maonian zhi bao?seal, "I had?bazheng maonian zhi bao carved because I would be 80 the next year, and as it had been finished by mid-winter, I first used it on the auspicious day of The Beginning of Spring." "During the winter solstice month last year, I thought to have another seal carved for my use since I would be 80 the following year. Thinking that there is no better concept than the Signs of the Eighth in The Grand Plan, I ordered?Khotan fine jade be used to carve the bazheng maonian zhi bao?seal. Since thanks to the aid of heaven, I am as healthy as ever and can govern the country diligently and cherish my people; I certainly dare not fail to exert myself even for one day." Thus, we know that the earliest example?was made in the winter of the 54th year of the reign, the material Khotan jade, and was first used at the beginning of spring the next year.? After the first seal was carved in the 54th year, large-scale production of these new seals began from that winter and ceaselessly continued until the 59th year. More than 140 seals were carved, including this massive Khotan green jade tian'en baxun zhi bao seal, made to be used and stored in its fitted box on its own. The Qianlong Emperor had said on many different occasions that "After the Three Dynasties of remote antiquity, only the three emperors Wudi of the Liang, Gaozong of the Song, and Shizu of the Yuan lived to over?80, but none of these managed to have five generations living under the same roof. I so enjoy Heaven's protection and all its blessings, for which I am profoundly grateful." "Fortunately, I have lived as long as 80 years, and since my health remains sound, I can still fulfil my desire to perform secondary sacrificial rituals entirely by myself. In the 2nd month of this year, I personally performed all the dawn ritual ceremonies at the Temple of the Sun. Being so blessed by Heaven is truly unique."? The Emperor considered it heavenly blessings that he could live till the age of 80 and had five generations living under one roof. Thus, the sentences?tian'en mu de ba zhi xun?(showered by Heaven's blessing to have lived till the age of 80) and?tian'en baxun shou?(emperor who has reached the age of 80) could be found in his poems and he had ordered the making of?tian'en baxun zhi bao?to express his feelings. The present seal, carved with the characters?tian'en baxun zhi bao?(Treasure of the emperor at 80 thanks to Heaven's blessing) is one of the imperial seals made in conjunction with his 80th birthday. The details of its making are clearly documented.?According to?Qing court archives,?"on the 19th day of the 10th month in the 54th year (5th December 1789), a green jade seal was sent in with a facsimile of the inscription?tian'en baxun zhi bao. The original text of the order transmitted from the Emperor states: 'Send it to Suzhou to be engraved with an inscription conforming to the impression facsimile, and have it done in all haste. By order of His Majesty.' On the 14th day of the 12th month (28th January 1790), the seal was returned from Suzhou and presented to the Emperor, who then ordered: 'Send it to?Maoqindian?(Hall of Diligence). End of order." It is thus known that the seal was made between the 10th and the 12th lunar months of the 54th year in the Qianlong reign and was engraved by a Suzhou craftsman. From this brief record, it is apparent that the Emperor was eager to see the carved seal.?It is 12.7 cm wide, an enormous seal, rarely seen.?
