Japan. Edo period. 2nd half of the 19th c. Ivory, finely carved and engraved with golden-yellow patina. Strongly haired South Sea islander with muscular legs, one sleeve of the robe lowered, exposing his stomach. A long knife in his right hand, a captured coral in his left, hanging over his shoulder. Height 5.2cm. Signed: Masatsugu, cf. MCI p. 481, presumably the 6th of this name. Condition A.
