A doucai bowl Of circular section, raised on a straight foot, the sides sloping gently outwards towards the mouth rim; decorated in doucai enamels, the exterior enamelled with a continuous scene depicting the ‘Three Stars’, the Gods of Prosperity (Fu), Status (Lu) and Longevity (Shao), and their attendants in a terraced garden, surrounded by pine and bamboo, the inner medallion painted with a scene of three boys playing in a garden, set within a double circle in underglaze blue, the double circle repeated to the inner and outer mouth rim, the foot, and around the six character Chenghua mark painted on the glazed base. Period: Kangxi (1662 - 1722). Diameter: 18.5 cm.
The British Museum has a doucai wine-cup, attributed Kangxi (1662 - 1722), which depicts the ‘Three Stars’ in a simplified version of this design (museum number PDF,A.765, on loan from the Sir Percival David Foundation of Chinese Art). As with the present bowl, Fu, the God of Prosperity, can be identified by his scholar’s dress, Lu, the God of Status, by the ruyi sceptre he carries, and Shou, the God of Longevity by his high domed forehead, and the peach of immortality, here being offered to an attendant.

By descent to the present owner, has been in the same family since ca 1900.
