Tsar Nicholas Faberge 19C Enamel Diamond 14 Karat Gold Paras

Faberge diamond and 14 karat gold enameled 19th century parasol handle and Macassar parasol. The exquisite ruby red guilloche enamel, jeweled 14 karat gold and diamond parasol handle was made by Mikhail Mikhailovich Karpinski. The guilloche enamel handle is set with a single .15 carat diamond and is mounted with 14 karat gold. The gold trim on the handle is two-color; green gold and red gold. The handle is hallmarked Faberge and also marked with, MK (Mikhail Mikhailovich Karpinski), the assayer, and another hallmark that is indiscernible. The parasol was made in France and is marked Lafarge, 40 Rue Dignon on the adjusting collar. The embroidered silk fabric has some splits from age. The full shaft is made of Macassar ebony. Included with the parasol is a custom fitted pale grey suede Faberge case. The Faberge handle is in good condition. The Faberge handle measures 1.6 inches long x 1 inch in diameter, the entire parasol measures 38.6 inches long. Note: alternate spellings of the maker's name include Mikhail Mikhailovich Karpinsky and Mikail Mikailovich Karpinshii. Included with the parasol is an original A. Passetti carte de visite cabinet albumen photograph of Margaret Dwight Collier Hitchcock (1840-1912), wife of Ethan A. Hitchcock. Written in pencil on the reverse is Mrs. Hitchcock in her Presentation Dress. Back of cabinet photograph bears the A. Pasetti Photographer's label mark with a St. Petersburg, Russia studio address that reads; A. Pasetti Photographe De La Cour Imperiale de Russie. De Sa Majeste La Reine Des Hellenes, De Son Altesse Imp. Le Gr. Duc Paul Alexandrovvitch, De S.A.J. Mme La Grsnfr Duchesse Alexandra Josifovna De S.A. Royale Le Prince De Calles Et De La Cour De Saxe Meiningen Nevsky No. 24 St. Petersbourg Telephon No. 700. The Imperial Russian photographer Alexander Ivanovich Pasetti was active from the 1870s to the1900s. Photograph is in good condition. The Faberge handle was presented by Russian Czar Nicholas II and Empress Alexandra to Ethan A. Hitchcock (1835-1909), first American Ambassador to Russia and Secretary of the Interior under President Theodore Roosevelt. The Faberge handle descended in the Hitchcock family to their daughter Anne E. Hitchcock (pictured in photograph with her sister Margaret, dressed in their fine Parisian gowns, being presented to the Russian Czarina in 1897). Anne later married William Sowden Sims (1858-1936) who commanded all United States naval forces during World War I and whom also won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1921. Ethan Hitchcock was in his sixties when President McKinley appointed him Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to Russia in 1897 and in February 1898 Ambassador Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary, the first Ambassador accredited from the United States to the court of Russia. The photograph of Russian Czar Nicholas II and Empress Alexander (of the imperial Romanov family) being offered, also descended from the Ethan A. Hitchcock family. Scans from photographs of Anne Hitchcock and her husband Admiral Sims are included from the book Admiral Sims and the Modern American Navy by Elting E. Morrison. Copies of the photograph of the Russian Imperial Emperor and Empress will also be included with the Faberge parasol. Please note* Lot number 320 consists only of the above listed Faberge parasol and original photograph of Margaret Hitchcock. The additional background photocopies of the Hitchcock and Russian Imperial family provided with this lot, are photocopies only and not the originals.
