拍品描述 翻译
An exceptionally fine 19th century albumen silver print photograph of Tsar Nicholas II (1868-1918) Emperor of Russia (1894-1917), Empress Alexandra (1872-1918) with their infant daughter, the Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna (1895-1918). The cabinet photograph by Imperial Russian court photographer L.L. Levitsky, was presented to Ethan A. Hitchcock (1835-1909), first Ambassador accredited from the United States to the court of Russia. In dark fountain pen ink on the reverse side of the photograph, Margaret Hitchcock, (wife of Ethan A. Hitchcock), has written the following: The baby princess of wip---sky, oldest daughter of the Emperor & Empress. The youngest daughter was born last June and is still too young to stand the camera. The Emperor is in the uniform of a Col. - which rank he needed before he was promoted to be Tzar of all the Russian &c &c. He will remain a Colonel until invited someday to accept promotion by the commanders of his armies - curious isn?t it? These are excellent likeness of both the Emp. & Empress. - I have never seen the baby - but would like to. Carte de visite photograph measures 6.5 inches x 4.25 inches and has the Russian Imperial Romanov family crest below the image. Back of cabinet card photograph bears the L. L. Levitsky photographer's label mark with a St. Petersburg, Russia studio address that reads; Photographe De L. L. Majestes Imperiales Levitsky St. Petersbourg Rue de Kazan No. 3. There is additional information in Russian cyrillic along with a circular St. Petersbourg stamp and the Imperial Russian crest. Photograph is in good condition, only some extremely light, minor age wear. Please note* Lot number 321 consists only of the above listed photograph. The additional background photocopies of the Hitchcock and Russian Imperial family provided with this lot, are photocopies only and not the originals. The other original photographs are being offered in this sale and they are lot number 320, 322 and 323. Provenance: The photograph was presented by Russian Czar Nicholas II to Ethan and Margaret Hitchcock Secretary of the Interior under President Theodore Roosevelt and Minister to Russia in 1897 and first Ambassador to the Court of Russia in 1898. The photograph was passed down in the Hitchcock family to Ethan's daughter Anne E. Hitchcock (pictured in photograph being presented to the Russian Czarina in 1897). Anne later married William Sowden Sims (1858-1936) who commanded all United States naval forces during World War I and whom also won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1921. The Faberge parasol being offered also descended from the Hitchcock estate. Scans from photographs of Anne Hitchcock and Admiral Sims are included from the book "Admiral Sims and the Modern American Navy" by Elting E. Morrison. Count Sergei Lvovich Levitsky (Russian-?????′? ??????? ????????, 1819 ? 1898), is considered one of the patriarchs of Russian photography and one of Europe's most important early photographic pioneers, inventors and innovators. Sergei L?vovich Levitsky (or Levitskii, 1819-1898) was among Russia?s earliest practitioners of daguerreotype photography. Levitsky was serving as a junior diplomat when the first photographic techniques were causing a sensation among the public and scientists. He took a leave from his duties to travel to Paris, meet with Daguerre and other pioneers of early photograph, and to attend lectures on the latest discoveries at the Sorbonne. Having perfected his skills, Levitsky traveled to Rome to photograph the Russian artistic community there, leaving behind a rare photo of author Nikolai Gogol. His sensitive portraits of celebrated Russian writers and artists earned him his first job photographing members of the Russian Imperial family in 1849. His work included portraits of: Czar Nicholas II, Czarina Alexandra Feodorovna, Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna of Russia, Grand Duchess Tatiana Nikolaevna of Russia, Grand Duchess Maria Nikolaevna of Russia, Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia, Alexei Nikolaevich Tsarevich of Russia. Considered the best of Russia's portrait photographers, the Levitsky studio photographed four generations of the Romanov dynasty. In 1877, it was awarded the title Photographer of their Royal Majesty.
