Two 19th century albumen silver print photographs of an Imperial Russian family member and a Prime minister. One carte de visite cabinet card is of the Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich (1847-1909), eldest uncle of the last Tsar Nicholas II and son of Emperor Alexander II of Russia. The photograph measures 5.75 x 4.25 inches and is signed In fountain pen ink on the reverse Grand Duke Vladimar ---. The lower portion of the photograph has the impressed A. Pasetti mark. The back of cabinet photograph bears the A. Pasetti Photographer's label mark with a St. Petersbourg, Russia studio address that reads; A. Pasetti Photographe De La Cour Imperiale de Russie. De Sa Majeste La Reine Des Hellenes, De Son Altesse Imp. Le Gr. Duc Paul Alexandrovvitch, De S.A.J. Mme La Grsnfr Duchesse Alexandra Josifovna De S.A. Royale Le Prince De Calles Et De La Cour De Saxe Meiningen Nevsky No. 24 St. Petersbourg Telephon No. 700. The imperial Russian photographer Alexander Ivanovich Pasetti was active from the 1870s to the1900s. Photograph is in good condition, only some extremely light, minor age wear. The other photograph of Russian Prime Minister, Ivan Logginovitch Goremykin (1839-1917), is signed in fountain pen ink script letters: In kind condolences? to M. Hitchcock - I. Goremykin S. Petersbourg Jan. 99. The signed cabinet card measures 8.5 x 5.5 inches and has the photographer's label in Russian cyrillic on the reverse side. Photograph is in good condition. Goremykin was a loyal supporter of Czar Nicholas II and the autocracy. He served as interior minister (1895-99) before succeeding Sergi Witte as premier in 1906. Nicholas II appointed Goremykin as his prime minister in early 1914. Provenance: The photographs were presented to Ethan A. Hitchcock (1835-1909) and his wife Margaret. E. A. Hitchcock was Secretary of the Interior under President Theodore Roosevelt and Minister to Russia in 1897 and first Ambassador to the Court of Russia in 1898. The photograph was passed down in the Hitchcock family to Ethan's daughter Anne E. Hitchcock (pictured in photograph being presented to the Russian Czarina in 1897). Anne later married William Sowden Sims (1858-1936) who commanded all United States naval forces during World War I and whom also won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1921. The Faberge parasol being offered also descended from the Hitchcock estate. Scans from photographs of Anne Hitchcock and Admiral Sims are included from the book "Admiral Sims and the Modern American Navy" by Elting E. Morrison. Please note* Lot number 322 consists only of the above listed two original photographs. The additional background photocopies provided of the Hitchcock and Russian Imperial family provided with this lot, are photocopies only and not the originals.
