UTAGAWA Kunisada/Toyokuni III (1786-1865) 歌川 豊国
The artist UTAGAWA Kunisada, also called Utawaga Toyokuni III, was the most popular draughtsman of Japanese woodblock prints of his time. Early, the half-orphan with the birth name Sumida Shōgorō developed a great artistic talent. Toyokuni I (1769-1825), the head of the Utagawa School, was impressed by his sketches and took him as an apprentice in 1800. As usual, he then was provided with an artist’s name that contained a part of his Master’s name ‘Kunisada’. He developed his own style that influenced the styles of other leading contemporary artist. Moreover, his productivity was extraordinary! His life's work is estimated at about 20,000 designs, which mostly show kabuki motifs and actor’s portraits. In 1844 he took the name of his former master and is therefore known as Toyokuni III in contemporary art literature.
