SHIBATA Zeshin (1807-1891)
SHIBATA Zeshin was a versatile artist who was active as a painter, ukiyo-e printmaker and lacquer artist. His specialty was the handling of urushi, a black Japanese lacquer, which made him unique. The focus of his artistic and handcrafted creation was the painting of panels and on all kinds of lacquer ware. He even developed a method that imitates the patina of old bronze. In the time of upheaval ZESHIN Shibata was unimpressed by external factors and continued his style. So he and his works became the epitome of Japanese art of the Western world and he participates at international exhibitions as the official representative of Japan. In 1890 he became a member of the Imperial Academy of Arts and a member of the Art Commission of the Imperial Household. Zeshins designs focus on traditional depictions of nature, Japanese legends and history.
