Exciting Renaissance revival cake basket by Reed and Barton that still shines with that over the top Victorian exuberance.Heavy metal cake basket with handle. The shape of the basket is rectangular with raised sides surrounding a central rectangular well. The central well has a solid border delineating it and is decorated with repouss?? designs of two cupids on either side of an oval cabochon that presumably would have been monogrammed. The cupids, which are hold up birds, are surrounded by a veritable Victorian garden of flowers; roses, violets, poppies, clematis and lilies. Large shell motifs punctuate the ends and a double rod spiral forms the lower part of the handle. The grasped part of the handle, which is decorated with acanthus decorations, is curved and flat. Embellished floral fittings secure the handle to the basket. The basket rests on four lion paw feet. There is a mark imprinted on the base end. It has MF' D & PLATED BY REED & BARTON . 4985 There are scratched marks Z 3MEASUREMENTS 11 ??a€ (28.6 cm) long x 8a€ (20.3 cm) wide x 2 3/8a€ (6 cm) tall. Weight 1 lb 7.3oz (660 g)CONDITION There is still a fair amount of silver left as it polished up. There are some scratches on the underside. On the upper central well there are pin hole wear marks and a few small circles of discoloration. There are also some wear scratches. I think that the pin holes are silver loss, as there are some on the cabochons between the cupids. The handle stands up on its own.A fanciful cake plate from the Victorian age. I love the intricacies of the flowers.Item ID: S-728
