TRAN VAN CAN (1910-1994) Le retour du marché, circa 1935Encre et couleurs sur soie, signée en bas à gauche47.5 x 35.5 cm - 18 3/4 x 14 inInk and color on silk, signed lower leftPROVENANCE:Collection du chef de bataillon Fernand Mallet, en poste à Hanoi du 24 janvier 1936 au 28 avril 1938Rapporté en 1938 et conservé familialement depuis?Tran Van Can dépeint trois jeunes femmes rentrant du marché, portant sur la hanche, la tête ou les épaules les paniers contenant la précieuse récolte dans un paysage bordé de bambous. L’oeuvre est tributaire des sujets de prédilection du peintre: figures féminines d’une part, scènes rurales que l’on pourrait presque qualifier de ? scène de genre ? d’autre part.L’emploi du tissu soyeux ne permet aucun repentir au peintre lorsqu’il utilise ses encres colorées ; elles épousent ici parfaitement le délicat support et laissent ainsi deviner l’assurance de sa main.Notons que la femme occupe une place prépondérante dans la peinture traditionnelle vietnamienne, qu’elle conserve chez les peintres modernes, à l’heure où l’on passe d’une vénération, quasi post-mortem, de la femme en tant qu’ancêtre à la reconnaissance de son r?le actif dans la société.La démarche gracieuse des jeunes filles, le paysage synthétique, mais non moins poétique, confère à une scène voulue réaliste un indéniable romantisme.He depicts three young women returning from the paddy fields, carrying the baskets with their precious harvest on hips, head or shoulders, in a landscape bordered by bamboos. The work pays tribute to the painter’s favourite subject: firstly, female figures, and secondly rural scenes that could almost be described as ?genre scenes?.Silk is a material that leaves a painter no margin for error when using coloured inks. Here they combine perfectly with the delicate medium, and illustrate Tran Van Can’s confident hand.It is worth noting that women played a predominant role in traditional Vietnamese painting.
