A RARE DOUBLE GOURD RATTLE, DATED 1924
China. The gourd of natural form retaining its original tendril, now serving as handle, and with a honey-golden patina. Depiction of a river landscape with pavilions, pagodas, pine trees and a fisherman in a boat in shallow relief.
Provenance: From a French estate.
Condition: Excellent condition with minor wear and traces of use. The rattle is retaining the gourd seeds inside, hence comes in fully working condition and can be used for its original purpose as a music instrument in a small orchestra or band.

Note the finely carved 20-character poem at the upper section of the gourd with a six-character inscription and incised small seal next to it as well as the Guangxu four-character seal mark on the base. Dated “made in winter of the Jiazi year” corresponding to 1924. The signature reads “Ma”. The poem describes memories of the Yunmen temple with its “thousands of summits” nearby.

品相:極好品相,輕微磨損與使用痕跡。葫蘆内還有葫蘆籽,因此完全還可以使用,其原始目的應該是奏樂樂器。
