Courbet. ?77.5 x 47.0 cm. ? ?Provenance: Liechtenstein private collection. ? ?Gustave Courbet - realist and rebel - was one of the most influential artists of the 19th century in France and is considered an important landscape, portrait and genre painter. Due to permanent breaking of taboos and numerous provocations in his paintings, such as in The origin of the world, as well as his sober representations of the peasant population (A funeral in Ornans), he first encountered disapproval in the French art scene. Courbet represented a modern conception of art, rejected academic traditions and opposed the conventionality to only depict historical and religious motifs on large-format canvases. With his art he not only intended to reach the educated bourgeoisie, but to bring contemporary history closer to the common herd.
