A CHINESE SANCAI GLAZED POTTERY MODEL OF A HORSE AND RIDER, TANG DYNASTY (AD 918-907). Modelled standing foursquare, the rider seated astride with arms bent, wearing a green and amber glazed robe on an amber saddle and green saddlecloth, the horse part glazed in amber, on a rectangular base. 36.5cm long x 40cm high. Provenance: Property of a Lancashire family. Cracked and restuck through horse's legs, horses' head and neck appears to be cracked and restored, small areas of retouching to glaze on horses' mane and amber glaze of rider's robe. the rider cracked and repaired around waist, the horse lacking tip of tail and but glazed at time of manufacture. Original pigment and glazes are still visible to his face and hair/hat, clothing, saddle and to the horse. The rider should presumably be holding an implement such as reins in his hands which is now lacking. Some typical surface deterioration and flaking.
